Google Glasses: Hands-Free Connectivity

We have entered the age of on the go computing. But Google wants to take it a step further. You have probably heard about their Project Glass initiative, which many people call Google glasses. These look like futuristic sci-fi glasses, and take being constantly connected to the next level.

A Computer Above Your Eyes

These augmented reality glasses let people talk to friends, share images, take notes and more all without having to use their hands. The actions you would like to take, whether to chat with friends or get directions, all display before your eyes.

A Stream of Useful Information

Google glasses are activated using voice commands. You can just request a bus schedule and it’ll be displayed for you. Or you can request directions to a theatre, and a map will be displayed just like how it would be on a smartphone.

According to a video produced by Google, the company’s augmented reality glasses would also allow you to check your day’s schedule and update your plans if things change. To illustrate, in the video a Google glasses-wearing consumer is going to the subway. As he hits the entrance his glasses tell him that subway service is suspended. The glasses then calculate a walking path to his destination.

An Unobtrusive Technology?

Supposedly Project Glass isn’t made to bombard users with an unending stream of technology. It’s actually meant to make it simpler for them to access the technology they want when they want it. For instance, a user may want to take a picture of his girlfriend standing on a bridge over the Chicago River. Instead of fumbling around for his camera or smartphone, he just presses a button on his Google glasses to click the shot.

There have been people who believe that these glasses will be used for advertisements. A few spoof videos have been made and posted on YouTube that demonstrate this idea. While it is not clear what will be projected into your field of vision with Project Glass, what is clear is that Google’s latest effort holds countless potential.

Get More out of Gmail

People and businesses regularly use Gmail these days. This makes sense, as it is simple to use, free, and Google makes good products. If you are using Gmail, you are probably not using it to its full potential. Gmail has several tools that make it easy to keep your email organized. We have outlined a few below and if you need instructions on how to use these tools, follow the links.

Label your messages: Applying labels to your messages visually organizes your inbox so you know what emails you should address first. For instance, if there are many emails that you need to deal with before the others you can tag them with a red “Important” label. Or, if you are organizing a vacation, you can apply a green “Vacation” label to any confirmation emails that come in.

Free up space with archiving: Do you like to keep your inbox clear of emails, but you can’t delete ones you have read because you might need them? Rather than create a bunch of different files you can simply archive old emails. Archiving emails sends them to an “All Mail” folder so they don’t clutter up your inbox but you can easily still access them when needed.

Add a signature: Tired of typing your name, phone number, and email address at the end of each of your Gmail messages? Why not create an email signature? Gmail allows you to save signatures that you can then simply drop into the bottom of your messages. This is a excellent time saver for anyone who writes dozens of email messages during a normal day.

Filter your incoming messages: Filtering is a very clever feature of Gmail. It will automatically label, file, delete, or archive emails. You can choose the “Filter messages like this” option from Gmail’s “More” menu and specify what an email should include to have a certain action applied to it. For instance, if you are looking to hire someone you can have any email that includes the words “resume” or “job” sent to a particular folder.

VoIP: Growing in Popularity

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a technology that enables people to make phone calls over the Internet. It can be very useful for businesses of any size as it is very cost-effective. Businesses that use VoIP can frequently save between 30 and 50 percent on their phone bills.

Many businesses, large and small, are still struggling and are looking to save money anyway they can. So, the question is; are businesses embracing VoIP as an obvious way to save money or are they unwilling to get rid of their trusty old landline?

A Move Toward VoIP?

A recent study says that businesses have not turned to VoIP technology as much as you’d think. However, the same study also says that this appears to be changing. Based on research from Heavy Reading, about 31 percent of installed business lines in North America were VoIP-based in 2011. The good news, though, is that Heavy Reading anticipates that this figure will increase to 66.6 percent by 2015. Heavy Reading also anticipates that by 2015 just 33.5 percent of business lines will consist of traditional circuit-switch versions.

Businesses are Switching to VoIP

That means that the amount of businesses that utilize VoIP to make calls will double in the next 3 years. But will there actually be such a dramatic change? And will the shift happen this quickly? More and more companies are becoming educated about the advantages of VoIP and whilst they have previously been slow to transition, the move to VoIP is snowballing so speedily that we are likely to see the percentage grow significantly.

A Bright Future for VoIP and Business

VoIP technology provides voice communication that is as clear and dependable as traditional landlines. Let’s also not forget that it can be considerably cheaper. Upper management may be slow to make the move but the big plus with VoIP, is that employees will not have to get used to anything new. Phones work just like they do with a landline. So you if think VoIP is a passing fad, think again.

The Best Online Music-Streaming Services

Many of us get our entertainment, news, and pay our bills online. So, it’s not a big surprise that we access our music over the Internet as well. Many individuals subscribe to on-line music-streaming services that are either free or cost money. The benefits are many. People don’t have to move their music files onto different devices plus they can listen to it anywhere they have access to the Internet.

If you are curious as to the differences in these services, we have highlighted a number below.

Pandora: Pandora is very popular because of its simple interface. After navigating to the website, you are able to input a song or artist you wish to hear and Pandora will create a “radio” station based upon that information. This is a wonderful way to learn about new artists with similar sounds. The stations that Pandora creates are easily personalized as well. If Pandora chooses an artist that you don’t like, you can click the thumbs down symbol on the song. Pandora provides further customization by allowing you to “seed” your station with various artists. While you can enjoy Pandora without creating an account, it is crucial if you want to save your customized stations.

Grooveshark: Grooveshark is a lot like Pandora in that it creates a “radio” station based on your musical tastes. However, you can also enjoy entire albums on Grooveshark and make playlists. One distinctive feature of Grooveshark is the power to upload your own music to the Grooveshark database if you can’t find what you are searching for. This is a smart and simple opportunity for Grooveshark to grow its library.

Rhapsody: Rhapsody has remained fairly popular due to its huge database of music. It has more then 14 million songs. Unfortunately, while many of the services we have talked about offer a free version, Rhapsody does not. It is $10 a month for unlimited music.

Spotify: Spotify is a Swedish music-streaming service which was launched in 2008. It has quickly grown to one of the most well-known and widely used services out there. People like the flexibility of Spotify. When you search for an artist, you can listen to a complete album or choose to use the radio function and Spotify will find similar artists for you to enjoy. Another advantage of Spotify is that you may create your own playlists and share them with other users if you so choose.

The Kinect: Inspiring Innovation

When was the last time we saw a Windows product which captured the essence of “cool”? Before recently it had been a while, but when Microsoft made the Kinect for Windows that all changed. The Kinect is a gesture and voice-sensing device that was originally developed for the Xbox gaming console.

Microsoft in February unveiled Kinect for Windows. This version of the device works with, not surprisingly, Windows-operated pcs. Now a number of users are putting the device to work in unexpected ways.

Innovative Uses for the Kinect

Earlier this year the Chief Marketing Manager for Nissan North America created a virtual tour of the Pathfinder’s interior at the Chicago Auto Show. The only thing that was actually on display was the outer shell of the Pathfinder, but individuals could see the upgraded interior on a large screen by using the Kinect.

Microsoft is also encouraging companies to utilize the Kinect creatively by working with them to create custom Kinect applications. Nearly 350 companies today are working with Microsoft in this way. For example, Boeing uses the device to create virtual tours of its 737 jets. Medical providers at a hospital in Canada are also using the device’s gesture-recognition to swipe through CT scans, removing the risk of touching germs on a keyboard or mouse.

Kinect: A Solid Hit

When Microsoft came up with the Kinect for Windows they hit a home run. Last year the Xbox 360 was the best selling video game console. In fact, since November 2010, more then 18 million Kinect devices have been sold. This is definitely transforming the way that the consumer views Microsoft products.

It may seem hard to believe, but Windows and its creator might have actually found something that is not only useful, but cool, which can do nothing but good for their reputation.

Hire the Best Employees by Changing your Interview Strategy

These days, whenever you post an open position on the Internet, countless people reply. Many of these people are eligible candidates for the job, so you call them in for an interview. But how do you dig through them and find the truly impressive and enthusiastic people? Since the interview is basically all you can go on, your interview questions are essential.

If you hold the conventional job interview, asking the same dull questions, chances are you won’t be able to tell the top candidates from the so-so ones. That’s why it is critical to craft a unique job interview strategy.

Ask the Right Questions

Rather then asking people what their former positions were, ask them how they positively impacted their positions at their previous employers. Did they create any processes that increased efficiency? Did they help their employers cut costs, if so, how?

One of the most typical things to ask a candidate concerns their strengths and weaknesses. Try to avoid asking them to list these; most of us have predetermined answers. Instead ask them what they bring to the culture of a company, or ask them what they do to make their job more satisfying. The answers you get to these sorts of questions will help you gauge the actual inventiveness of the person you are evaluating.

If you truly are interested in which of your candidates are the most creative, give them a simple task to perform. It doesn’t have to be complicated; you can ask them to write an essay describing how they would approach their job if hired. You could ask them to jot down their ideas on what their perfect workspace would look like. Ask them to think of new names for company services or products. Basically, ask them anything that will get their creative juices flowing.

Today’s job market is such that it’s probable that many skilled people will apply to your open position. So, in order to sift through these applicants and find the most creative and inventive individuals, change your interview tactics to hone in on these traits.

Will Videoconferencing Replace Business Travel

Nobody likes traveling for business. Airports are a headache, with all that business of removing your shoes, paying extra to stow bags, as well as the frequent delays and cancellations. We often overeat on bad fast food or at hotel buffets, also, when we’re traveling for business. Then there’s the lack of sleep. It’s no surprise that so many business people are longing for developments in videoconferencing technology. After all, if this technology improves sufficiently – the reasoning goes – maybe off-site business meetings, and the business travel that accompanies this, will be a thing of the past.

The End of Business Travel?

But is this a thing that we should strive for in business? Is it the best thing if videoconferencing replaces face-to-face meetings altogether? Possibly not, think about the differences between meetings that are face-to-face versus videoconferencing.

When people around the world sign on to a videoconference, they generally introduce themselves quickly, if necessary, and then dive into the goal at hand. Brainstorming does not often play a large role in videoconferencing; this is partially due to the worry that the connection may fail. As well, there are lots of distractions within the individual’s office that can make fluid conversation difficult.

The Benefits of Face-to-Face Time

Face-to-face interactions are more personal and allow conversation to develop easily. Meetings may last longer if this happens, but the benefits of it can be great. New ideas come from the creative evolution of conversation. While it’s true that every meeting may not become a positive brainstorming session, it can be a great opportunity to develop interpersonal relationships in the workplace.

Business Travel is Here to Stay

Yes, business travel is a hassle and videoconferencing is convenient. However, there are occassions when meeting face-to-face is the best option for generating the most innovative business solutions. Because of this, don’t expect savvy business executives to ever totally replace business travel with videoconferencing.

The Factors that are Limiting Technology

How many kids grew up anticipating the day when humans would travel the globe with individual jet packs strapped to their backs? How many dreamt of full meals that come in pill form or teleporters? Those technologies haven’t happened. However, in the last 2 decades alone, we’ve seen enough new tech to fill an early 1990s science-fiction flick. With tablet computers we can carry all the computing power of a bulky desktop computer in our hands. With smartphones we are able to instantly send text messages to our friends and due to GPS, we never have to get lost while driving again.

So, with all of this technology, why don’t we have jet packs yet? What variables are preventing us from making these technological leaps?

Building a Better Battery

Batteries power nearly all of our technology, particularly as we move into a more mobile world. As a result, the more limited our batteries are, the more limitations we have technologically. They are an integral part of our technology, so we need to focus on improving them before we can really make jumps in technology. Thankfully, researchers at Chicago’s Northwestern University are creating a more efficient lithium-ion battery, which we discussed in a blog post last week. This may solve this issue in the coming years.

Improving Internet Access

Another hurdle to conquer is that not enough individuals have access to the Internet. In fact, most of the globe doesn’t have access to it. This is naturally limiting developments in technology. It goes back to the basic concept of the more minds we have working on a problem, the faster we will solve it.

The Business of New Tech

Last but not least there is the bureaucracy. Business matters, like patent laws, can hamper technological progress. Individuals and businesses that come up with revolutionary things have to first traverse these waters. But if government regulations are clear and simple to understand, it could prevent some of this.

While these are a few of the issues that prevent technology from advancing, it still is developing at a rapid pace. So who knows what is in store for us in the next year or two.

Alternatives to Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop is an amazing tool. It lets business owners edit the images they need to produce professional-looking brochures, pamphlets, and marketing materials. However, Photoshop is far from inexpensive. A simple online scan will show that newer versions of this image-editing program can run higher then $600. For small business owners with limited funds, this program isn’t feasible. This doesn’t mean, though, that these small business owners don’t have photo-editing options. In fact, businesses can pick from a host of alternatives that are not only cheaper but are actually free.

These programs might not contain all the elements that Photoshop boasts, but they have more than enough photo-editing features for most small business owners. Here are three of the highest quality free photo-editing programs available today:

GIMP

GIMP is very easy to use and contains most of the features from Photoshop that a business owner would need to create marketing material. The beauty of GIMP is that it’s absolutely free!

Paint.NET

Did you ever use MSPiant? It came with your Windows operating system and was very basic. Paint.NET is its successor and is a lot more powerful then its predecessor. One fantastic aspect for designers is an unlimited undo button. Paint.NET is a free program; the only negative regarding it is that it only works on Windows machines.

Picnik

Picnik is fast, free, and easy to use. It works on the Mac, Windows, and Linux operating systems and you don’t have to download files to use it. It has some interesting special effects as well, making it a very popular photo-editing program.

In the end, if you are looking for a program that allows you to create professional marketing material, you don’t have to spend a lot. These programs will let you accomplish this task at no cost.

Improving Battery Technology

Have you ever needed your smartphone only to discover that the battery has died and you’re nowhere near an outlet? It’s annoying, but in a few years, it could be a thing of the past.

A Better Battery on the Way?

A team of engineers at Chicago’s Northwestern University may have found a way to make a battery that lasts longer and charges itself in a few minutes, instead of overnight. This story reports on these research efforts. This is fantastic news for smartphone users around the world.

What they are working on is a new lithium-ion battery that has more then 10 times the life of present batteries. Additionally, after a year of operation, which the researchers estimate to be about 150 charges, these new lithium-ion batteries would continue to be 5 times more effective then today’s lithium-ion batteries.

A Charged Battery for a Week

Ultimately, this new cell phone battery could stay charged for a full week, despite all the apps we use daily. And the charging time? Under 15 minutes. That will sure make our lives easier, but more than this, this new battery technology may lead to smaller and more efficient batteries for electric cars.  This could in turn, have a dramatic effect on our reliance on fossil fuels.

Batteries Powering Technological Change

The new battery technology isn’t available yet for consumers, but the Northwestern researchers claim that it could hit the market in three to five years. This is a big step. When we look at breakthroughs in technology, we tend to ignore the batteries that power our latest gadgets. Battery limitations are one of the factors holding back an even greater technology revolution. The hope is that the research done at Northwestern University changes this.
